Facial Clays
Natural Clays can do wonders for your skin no matter what type of skin or skin conditions you have. Many have the misconception that clays are just for oily, acneic skin and this is just not true. Because clays come from the earth they contain many needed minerals, vitamins, and nutrients that your skin craves. Here are the best and most common clays you can get at home and use on a weekly basis.
I want to add that any facial mask should only be used 2-3x per week due to their stronger and more potent ingredients.
Red Clay: This clay is best used with normal skin. It is rich in Minerals and Iron which make it a great clay to use weekly to replenish skin's nutrients for a more refreshed appearance.
French Pink Clay: This clay is great for sensitive or irritated skin. It contains Calcite, Iron, Illite, and Montmorillonite. It is a mixture of Red and White clay which cause a soothing, calming and extremely mild effect on the skin.
Bentonite Clay: This is an amazing clay to use with clogged pores or blackheads. It is also referred to as Montmorillonite and it is of volcanic origin which makes it rich in magnesium. Once this clay becomes hydrated its electrical and molecular components change and produce electrical charges which cause it to swell and become like a porous sponge. This allows it to soak up bacteria and debris from the follicle wall through electrical attraction.
Yellow Clay: This clay is best for normal to oily skin due to its mild exfoliation and gentle drawing action. It can be used to clean pores as well but in a more mild way.
Green Clay: Also known as French Green Clay. This clay is best used with oily/acneic skin. It is very rich in minerals such as Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphorous, Silica, Potassium, Copper, Silicon, Selenium, and Manganese. WARNING: Because it is so rich in minerals and very potent be sure to use occasionally and in small doses or it could be too drying and cause irritation.
White Clay: Also called Kaolin, this clay is also best for oily skin. It contains, Silica, Magnesium, Calcium, and Zinc. It is very fine and both drying and disinfecting. It is very absorbent but more mild than Green Clay for more sensitive oily/acneic skin types.
Fuller's Earth: This is the most powerful and string clay available for your skin. It is made from Magnesia, Silica, Iron Oxides, Lime, and Water. It is great at drawing impurities out of your pores and also has a slight bleaching effect on the skin making it great for people with acne scars or sun damage hyperpigmentation.
Rhassoul Clay: Comes from the same family as Red Clay but specifically from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Just like Bentonite Clay it come from volcanic earth and swells in water. It is very rich in minerals and works great at increasing skin's elasticity, evening skin tone, reducing blemishes and blackheads, and reducing skin's dryness or flakiness.
To use clays as masks just add a little water, oil, or yogurt/cream. You can also add other key ingredients like essential oils and herbs to target specific results you hope to see on your face.
